Mortuus: De contemplanda morte

30/10/08  ||  theProphet

As I come of age, I delve deeper and deeper into the black metal abyss, occasionally returning to the wretched, sun-afflicted surface with whatever aural abomination I have retrieved from its twisted depths. Behold then, my latest find, Mortuus.

Mortuus is a Swedish black metal duo with shitloads of cred and no connection to Marduk’s vocalist whatsoever. The high cred stems from a lot of different factors; secretive band members, ambitious lyrical themes, few releases and ties to Norma Evangelium Diaboli. Also, like most artists affiliated with NOEVDIA, their music is high quality blasphemy. Mortuus spurts their corrosive man-cream all over conventional black metal songwriting, and constructs long windling passages of evil sounding melodies coupled with surprisingly heavy riffs. The songs are typically long, and contains dozens of different, mid-paced riffs. Mortuus comes off as sounding thoroughly evil, with lots of disharmonized chords strewn within the songs. The sound of “DCM” can be described as experimental, but I wouldn’t really compare it to the works of other bands such as Blut Aus Nord, Spectre or later Abigor, though.

DCM” also sports a fantastic fucking production, it’s all very crisp and natural, with razor sharp guitars, organic drums and a rumbling bass which anchors the soundpicture. The vocals are also nicely embedded within the mix, making Tehôms maniacal screams sound wholly incorporated in Mortuus’ songs.

In conclusion, “De Contemplanda Morte” has after repeated listens turned out to be one of last years better releases, and everyone interested in this kind of black metal, should endeavor to check Mortuus out immediately on their MySpace below. The cover is fucking ace as well, I’m thinking of buying the LP version, framing it and putting it on my wall.

That’s it for now… Peace out!
